A writer once quipped, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” Charles Dudley Warner wittingly wrote this in an editorial for a newspaper he published back in 1897, according to the New York Times. It’s as if Mark Twain stood beside Warner as he scribbled his satire to paper.
Weather impacts everyone on this rock we call Earth. We “do” actively do something about whatever nature throws at us, however. We ask Siri or Google if it will rain at the bus stop in the morning. If rain is in the forecast, you may bring an umbrella on your travels. How about the first measurable snowfall of the season. After all, the snowblower that’s been sitting in the garage for seven months needs a tune-up.
Weather apps give us detailed hourly forecasts showing the temperature, wind speed, and direction at a specific time. Do I need to put up a tent for the party this weekend? Is it better to have the party indoors because it will be cool and cloudy? We plan our day around what the weather will be like.
Sometimes these apps and smart home devices don’t have the answer you want. Where are the storms? How intense will these storms be? Do I need to worry about flooding? How much snow? Will I be driving through this band of lake effect snow?
We live in such a unique area where weather conditions can be completely different within 10 minutes of each other, especially during the winter. Look no further than Winter Storm Knife in November of 2014. Where else can you live where one side of the town has a dusting while the other half has snow piles taller than an NFL football player?
The Weathered Buffalo is a blog where we can celebrate our mild summers, talk about the vibrant and cool falls, and bicker about brutal winters. While we may occasionally post weather forecasts, our focus is on sharing captivating stories about the weather and environment that affects us all. This is just the beginning, so stay tuned for more.
